Miami Lighthouse Summer Transition Program

This program provides employability skills training to visually impaired teenagers.  It is so important that teens learn these skills so they can successfully "transition" into adulthood, including college, the work place, and life in general.  This year we received funding to provide this program year-round.  We primarily serve teens on teacher planning days, one Saturday a month, and plan to serve on spring break and for the entire summer.; What I would like to request, if it interests you and you think you can provide a valuable experience for our teens, is that during spring break (April 2-6, 2007) you host one of our teens as an "intern" at your place of business.  They would be primarily interested in clerical work (answering phones, making copies, etc.). We could tailor experiences to the specific work you have and the area of interest of our teens.  Please let me know at your earliest convenience if this is something that would interest you.  Our teens would really benefit.

We will also be looking for work experiences (internship opportunities) for the summer. This would most likely be for a couple of days per week.

Please email me if you have any questions.

Campaign Urges Online Youth To Type Smart, Post Wisely The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the primary law enforcement arm of the U.S. Postal Service, has launched a campaign to encourage youth to practice safe, smart habits when posting information about themselves on social networking Web sites and blogs.
As Chief Postal Inspector Lee Heath observes: As the popularity and usage of online social networking sites continue to flourish, it is essential that we empower youth to be cautious, aware and intelligent about the information they post. The 2 SMRT 4U campaign, and its tagline, "Type Smart, Post Wisely," is a Postal Inspection Service-led effort designed to reinforce the U.S. Attorney General's
Project Safe Childhood initiative to promote Internet safety. We hope it will help remind teens of the importance of navigating smartly and thinking before posting personal information online. Women Helping Youth Soar, Ponder, Educate and Relate (WHYSPER),

Needs mentors for girls between the ages of 4 to 18.

Our mentoring approach is “mentor friendly” in that the mentor chooses girls whose interests and location are in keeping with that of the mentor. We ask that you see your charge at least twice a month and speak with her weekly. We ask that you incorporate her in day-to-day activities, as many are not aware of how to do things as simple as grocery shopping. The company also will pay for some outings that only you and your charge may have an interest in.

If this is a program you feel may interest you please call (786) 234-6698 or e-mail WHYSPER_INC@NETSCAPE.COM  for more information or an application.
